Jan is a marine engineer, boat skipper and scuba diver who has been on or under the sea for most of his working life.  A former Royal Navy Officer in the Marine Engineer (Submarines) branch, Jan has instructed officer cadets at the Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth, submariner trainees at the Submarine Escape Training Tank and has commanded the RN Submarine Parachute Assistance Group.  He has also worked on offshore oil installations in the North Sea, freighters in the Far East and the North Atlantic, and cruise liners on the Alaska run, for companies such as Talisman Energy, P&O Nedlloyd, Blue Star and P&O Cruises.
